EdFund is one of the nation's leading providers of student loan guarantee services under the Federal Family Education Loan Program. The organization processes more than $9.3 billion in student loans annually (including consolidation loans) and manages a portfolio of outstanding loans valued at $29 billion. EdFund is headquartered in Rancho Cordova, California with regional offices located across the country. For more about EdFund, visit www.edfund.com.
At the heart of EdFund’s core business is a mission-critical application known as the Financial Aid Processing System (FAPS). It is the main guarantee system and initiates everything for the EdFund process. In 2001, after several years of outsourcing, EdFund wanted to bring FAPS in house to gain greater management flexibility and, possibly, save money.
To help meet their objectives, EdFund contracted with Jeskell for creation of a completely new in-house Data Center built around an IBM S/390 Enterprise (Mainframe) Server. One year after deployment, EdFund was saving $3,000 per month. In addition to the IBM mainframe, Jeskell provided and installed an IBM S/390 Enterprise Server, S/390 software, an attached IBM Enterprise Storage Server, and an IBM Automated Tape Library. Jeskell also helped EdFund find staff for the new center and bring FAPS into the new environment.
The success of the initial data center initiative has led to a strong relationship between EdFund and Jeskell. So, when the client needed more capability in 2005, they again turned to Jeskell. The result was an upgrade to a new IBM z890 mainframe, increased IBM storage, and an expanded IBM tape library.
Since that first upgrade, Jeskell has continued to support EdFund data center operations as new applications have come online and system workloads have increased. “We are very proud of our strong relationship with EdFund”, says Roy Messineo, Jeskell Client Manager. “They have some ambitious plans for the coming years and we’re excited to be included.”
