Upgrade to IBM Power8 Now & Get Additional 20% Off

Dec 12, 2016 7:26:00 AM | Infrastructure Optimization

Does your data center have a number of older Power 5, 6, and 7 machines that you want to replace with Power 8? If so, the 4th quarter of 2016 is a great time to act.Chip - 2016WP Temin 2016WP2.jpg

IBM has had in effect the "Power Capacity Reset Offer" for some time now, but as of 11/8/16, the program was modified and augmented so that any class of p5, p6, or p7 can be retired and the CPU activations can be traded in towards the purchase price of p8 activations. (Before, only Enterprise class "donor" systems qualified.)

Historically, the ratio of trade in CPU activations paid off to discount 80% of the purchase price of new p8 activations, but during this window that gets bumped up to 100%. The trade in ratio remains the same as before, which is:

CPU generation

Trade In Ratio of CPU Activations

Power 7

2:1

Power 6

3:1

Power 5

5:1

Memory won't carry over to the new system, and in most cases adapters and disk won't, either. Even so, it's worth investigating how much you're paying for maintenance on your older systems and comparing that to a price comparison quote for a new Power 8.

In most cases, the cost of leasing a new system is cheaper than paying maintenance on an older system. Additionally, Power 8 has many enhancements to help you save on electrical and cooling costs.

To determine the size system you need, you can use IBM's Power Systems Performance Report (http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/power/hardware/reports/system_perf.html) to compare the performance of your existing system to a Power 8. Or engage with a Jeskell technical sales rep and have us do the work for you.

With the system type and serial number, we can get the inventory of your system from IBM and give you a "like-for-like" configuration, then either build a larger Power 8 to plan for future growth, or scale down the specifications (if the utilization on your current system is lower than 80%).

While this promotion will continue in 2018, it will be in a diminished form, so the best time to act is now. For the next few weeks, you can get an additional 20% price break, and the catalog of eligible trade in systems won't ever be wider than it is during this promotion enhancement.
